Facilitating effective and peaceful resolutions
Mediation gives you and the other party a chance to discuss your dispute on your own terms, with a neutral person helping you focus on the future and reach a resolution. An agreement that satisfies both parties is more likely to last, and reduces future conflict over how arrangements – particularly time with children – are interpreted.
Many community centres offer mediation, but in our experience, private mediators and lawyer-assisted mediation tend to achieve better outcomes. Having a third party advocate for your position and goals helps avoid the personal conflict and negative feelings that can otherwise get in the way.
Mediation can take place at any stage of your family law matter, even after Court proceedings have started, as a way of resolving your dispute. If you’re concerned about your safety or a power imbalance, we can arrange shuttle mediation, so you don’t come into contact with the other party.
Except if an exemption applies to you, mediation is an essential step before embarking on litigation.
Importantly, mediation allows you and your ex to maintain control over your dispute rather than relinquishing decisions about your family to a Judge.

Fiona and her team have recently developed The Settlement Space, a specialist mediation arm of Reid Family Lawyers.
Understanding that every case is different, the nuances of family violence and the importance of good outcomes for your children, Fiona creates a respectful and supportive environment where you can safely explore settlement options which best suit your family.
Given the current delays in the family courts and the cost of litigation, mediation is becoming more and more common as a means of resolution.
Happy to work directly with parties and in lawyer assisted mediations, Fiona also has access to experienced counsellors who can work with your children in a child inclusive process so that they also have a voice.
